5-4-3-2-1: Fleur Hitchcock

By Jim Dean, August 11, 2016

We’re really looking forward to reading Bus Stop Baby by Fleur Hitchcock, published 2 weeks ago by Piccadilly Press, so it’s great to have her tackling our 5-4-3-2-1 feature today!

5 classics you wish more people were reading today

I’d like everyone to read The Mouse and His Child, by Russell Hoban, because it’s beautifully written, a slow story of redemption that still stands up years after it was written and still moves me.

The Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster, because it’s magical.

The Runaway Summer by Nina Bawden which is an early tale of refugees and understanding of others.

101 Dalmatians, Dodie Smith.  It’s such a good story, and reads aloud really well too.

The 13 Clocks, James Thurber, just because.

4 pieces of advice you’d give yourself if you could travel back in time to before you became a published author

If I could go back now, I’d tell myself to stop agonizing about the tiny things. If the story isn’t right, there’s really no point.

I’d suggest I got an exercise regime going before I started writing. I’d keep on using the notebooks and I’d ALWAYS print out every draft.

3 authors you’d want with you if you were stranded on a desert island

Assuming I can reach into the author vaults, I would take Joan Aiken because I’m sure she’d have a been a riot on a desert island, and full of ideas for escape, Arthur Ransome because he knew how to tie a knot and steady the rigging, and Gill Lewis, she’d know how to handle the wildlife.

2 books you’d save from a burning bookcase

I’ve an early Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with the illustrations done by Michael Simeon,

And I’ve a signed Sleeper and the Spindle

1 relationship you love reading about

Siblings – I love siblings.  I love the anger, the frustration and the warmth.
